Conference Summary

The Iowa/Nebraska System Protection and Substation Conference was originally established in 1977 as a three-day protection school presented by Westinghouse. It continued as a one-day protection seminar until 1991, when a second day was added to cover general substation topics. In 2002, a third day was added to integrate current events and trends affecting our utilities. The third day this year will cover topics on operations. Conference attendance started with 39 participants in 1977 and expanded to well over 270 in 2023. Attendee costs remain at a minimum of $7.50 in 1981 to $100.00 in 2023.

Attendees include engineers, technicians, and other substation professionals from utilities across Iowa and Nebraska. Along with various municipalities, cooperatives, and consultants, the following major utilities are presented:

The program is organized by the Omaha Public Power District’s engineering division. The program consists of informal presentations by the host vendor and the participating utilities. Presentations are technical in nature and address design, application, or operational issues. Many presenters make their slides available for attendees after the conference.

This utility conference is unique because it comprises utility professionals and one sponsoring manufacturer or vendor. Utility discussions and presentations make up the bulk of the day’s presentations. These program guidelines have ensured that this event remains a successful utility engineer’s conference.
